Subject: Update on Haiti</p>
<p>IAHV&#8217;s Haiti team is hard at work preparing the Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps to build Haiti up once the emergency phase is over. We will train 100 Haitian young adults as Art of Living teachers &#8211; Part 1, YES!, and ArtExcel &#8211; spreading Guruji&#8217;s grace to hundreds of thousands when they serve Haiti for two years.  The Youth Corps will also implement and train others in community driven<br />
development projects, including: community gardens, rainwater harvesting, compost toilets, and biogas generation. </p>

<p>The Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps has not yet begun. Hear from our strongest candidates:</p>
<p>“IAHV didn’t come here to serve me. It came here to teach me how to serve.  I have no choice but to serve now. With the catastrophe that has hit the country, people who participate in our programs, who practice these breathing exercises start to live in the present moment. I cannot say enough how important our teaching this is in Haiti. ” – Lesly, age 23</p>
<p>“ We don’t just work for Haiti, but for the world, because we are the leaders who will save our planet. We feel very proud doing this work. We are creating a new life built by youth, because youth are the strength of this country.” – Lovely, age 19</p>
<p>Lesly and Lovely lead a group of YLTP grads who visit Cap Haitian&#8217;s hospitals, teaching Breath Water Sound workshops and reading uplifting spiritual wisdom to earthquake victims. </p>
<p>“ I’ve been sleeping on the street with my whole family since the earthquake. The only way I can feel at peace is when I’m in action, when I help the people around me that are suffering. I have a responsibility as a leader to drop my own needs to help those around me. ” – Samuel, age 19. </p>
<p>Samuel and his brother Samson work with other community youth to uplift the displaced earthquake victims who have occupied a football field in Les Cayes.  Every morning, they teach yoga and stress-reduction techniques and play sports with the children. In the evenings, they teach salsa dancing and host singing and prayer sessions in the camps.</p>

Subject: Haiti Relief Update</p>
<p>The plans are now set for our Haiti Trauma Relief efforts!</p>
<p>IAHV will train a group of 50 Haitian young adults (ages 18-30) to form the<br />
Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps. The Youth Corps will dedicate 2 years to serving<br />
their country: to implement mass-scale mental health interventions (AoL<br />
courses) and community-based sustainable solutions for food, water, sanitation,<br />
and construction systems (Permaculture).</p>
<p>The Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps is born out of IAHV&#8217;s programs in Haiti,<br />
pre-earthquake. Since October 2007, IAHV has impacted 350 Haitian youth in:<br />
youth leadership, sustainable agriculture, and small business development.</p>

<p>‘Love expresses itself as Seva (Selfless Service)’.<br />
‘Its impossible to know what true love is until you have done something selfless for others’. </p>
<p>When I did my first few Art of Living courses, I heard these lines, but never realized what they meant, and how much power they had… </p>
<p>In those early times, one night, I came home utterly exhausted. I saw that my mom and dad were sleeping. A thought wandered lazily in my mind, let me press my parent’s feet. But the overwhelming feeling was to instantaneously hit the bed. But the second I willed my spirit to go ahead and just do it, fresh energy surged through my body, all my fatigue vanished… That too in just a moment – it was like magic! (But then, so is love, a magic that is always sparkling, ever new!) That commitment of ‘I want to do it, come what may’, brought in a wave of liveliness, quite unlike any other I had ever experienced. </p>
<p>Over the years, like me, I have seen many, many people suddenly come alive with smiles and enthusiasm, ready to help and serve… Their tiredness and fatigue just dissolve like an early morning mist which simply evaporates as the sun rises. The immense joy and fulfillment that one gets by doing something for other people, by lending a helping hand is simply unparalleled and doing Seva can be quite an addiction ? </p>

<p>The energy and the inspiration are always there for the taking, you only need to care! </p>
<p>But unfortunately many, many people have a limited and myopic idea of Seva. </p>
<p>For most people, Seva is normally limited to going to a slum or a village and clean the gutters and roads, or giving money to a beggar (and feeling good about it), or giving away old clothes (and making space for new ones), or donating blood or going to an orphanage and spending time with the kids there, or feeding people, or merely wearing a red ribbon at an AIDS charity concert, etc (With a few exceptions, many celebs have mastered doing this kind of politically correct Seva). This kind of Seva typically increases the dependency of the people who are being “helped” on the “helper” and is done out of a feeling of pity and no belongingness at all. </p>
<p>Seva of course, is all this, but it can be much, much more. </p>
<p>First and foremost we realize that every soul on this planet is desperately yearning for peace and fulfillment. This, it can get, only through the Knowledge of the Self, through meditation and through the process of giving love. Making THAT happen would be the ultimate Seva. Because now you are doing your actions out of genuine compassion and care for people. And you are making them self sufficient, not dependent and obligated. </p>
<p>When I did the Art of Living series of Workshops I realized how they empower people to experience profound peace, unconditional love and enthusiasm and sustain those with Knowledge and meditation. This in turn allows people to be good and creatively do good, to achieve success with minimal or no stress and to celebrate and live life to its fullest. </p>

<p>Sa ae va (word Seva split in Sanskrit) means ‘to be like Him’, to be like God or Nature. The divine has created such amazing beauty, such abundant variety, just so that we can be happy. If each one of us can be happy and in turn can spread that happiness, we would be fulfilling the planet’s greatest need. </p>
<p>If we can make a fire in the hearts of people by kindling that spark of inspiration which is already there, to support each other’s highest ideals- Then that would indeed be Seva in it’s full glory and this planet will transform into a paradise, a true Divya Samaj… </p>
<p>This is my dream… what’s yours? </p>

<p>All those who were feeling strong were taken aback!</p>
<p>If you are in love, you feel weak because love makes you weak. Yet there is no power stronger than love. Love is strength. (All those who had raised their hands for strong suddenly felt weak!). Yet love is the greatest power on earth. You feel absolutely powerful when you are with the Divine.</p>
<p>Someone asked: &#8220;But why do we keep alternating between the two?&#8221;</p>
<p>Sri Sri: &#8220;That is the fluctuation in life.&#8221;</p>

<p>Inside prison their anger boils over and violence is common.</p>
<p>But a new programme of yoga lessons is helping inmates to discover ways to calm themselves and take a more positive look at their lives, even if they never get out from behind bars.</p>
<p><strong>Honest smiles</strong></p>
<p>From the deck of a rusty old boxing ring Ansuya Khoosal takes the prisoners through a series of yoga positions and breathing exercises.</p>

<p><!-- E IIMA -->&#8220;Breathe in&#8230; And let go,&#8221; she repeats.</p>
<p>The prisoners have their eyes shut, listening to her soothing voice.</p>
<p>They appear at peace with themselves.</p>
<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t see any smiles!&#8221; Ansuya says, and wide, honest grins appear on their faces.</p>
<p>They stand in their bright orange uniforms, flinging their arms up in a flurry of stretches.</p>
<p>Some inmates take it very seriously, others treat it like a bit of a lark, but it is clear that the lessons are popular.</p>
<p>It is the last day of a seven day programme of lessons, teaching the inmates basic yoga positions, as well as breathing exercises devised by yoga master Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.</p>
<p>The organisation that provides the teaching, Art of Living, say they hope the inmates will take what they have learned and practice in their cells on their own.</p>
<p>The organisation cannot run classes every week, but they have identified enthusiastic inmates to carry on encouraging their cell-mates to continue.</p>
<p><strong>A life inside</strong></p>
<p>Maxwell Buthelezi, 24, is in jail for life.</p>

<p>While other students were studying, he was out with his friends, robbing motorists at gunpoint wearing a fake policeman&#8217;s uniform.</p>
<p>He got deeper and deeper into a gang.</p>
<p>Until one day, he and his friends went to rob a cargo ship they knew was carrying drugs.</p>
<p>But the police were waiting for them.</p>
<p>They suspected one of the gang sold them out, and as the ensuing gun battle with police raged, they brutally murdered him.</p>
<p>&#8220;My family is very ashamed of me,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>He is two years into his 20-year minimum sentence.</p>
<p>His prison identity card is marked that he is in for life, and can only be released when the Department of Corrections decides.</p>
<p>&#8220;This programme has helped me with my anger,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>&#8220;Just the other day I was talking on the phone and someone was bothering me. Normally I would fight him, but I stopped myself.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I said to him: &#8216;Listen my brother, what is it that you want me to do?&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;That night in my cell I felt happy, because I knew I&#8217;d dealt with the situation in the right way.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Sceptical</strong></p>
<p>Mrs Khoosal says she has seen a change in the prisoners in just the seven days since she first met them.</p>

<p>&#8220;They thought it was an Indian thing, and heckled us, but by the end I could feel they weren&#8217;t just doing it for the certificate.&#8221;</p>
<p>The yoga technique she teaches can control emotions, she says.</p>
<p>&#8220;When we are angry we breath a certain way and when we are sad we breath another.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you can control the breathing, you can therefore control the emotion.&#8221;</p>
<p>The inmates weren&#8217;t the only ones who were sceptical.</p>
<p>&#8220;When I first heard about it I thought: &#8216;How can that help?&#8217;&#8221; Anita Hanekom, head of Social Services at the prison told the BBC.</p>
<p>&#8220;But now I&#8217;ve seen it can work.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now the Department of Correctional Services which runs South Africa&#8217;s prisons wants to implement the programme in other jails.</p>
<p>It has worked in other countries too.</p>
<p>But South Africa&#8217;s prison system remains a brutal and frightening world.</p>
<p>Many inmates join gangs for protection, and the gangs&#8217; influence extends into the world outside where violent crime is rampant.</p>

The sound of the morning bell at Lokpuram Public School, Pokhran-II in Thane, is greeted by students sitting still in their seats with eyes shut. The students chant in a co-ordinated manner for ten minutes. As if in a trance, they train at discovering <span class="yshortcuts">inner peace</span>.</p>
<p>The 15 minutes of meditation prior to mathematics or English lessons with experts, appears to have had a healing effect on the children dealing with heightened anxiety and anger in the wake of terror strikes.</p>
<p>&#8220;These children are constantly asking questions. They have seen the gun battle, sitting in their living rooms and are angry and confused. Adding to this, is the stress of coping with a difficult curriculum,&#8217; &#8216; says Jyoti Thakkar, a meditation guru. &#8220;All this has had a colossal negative impact on young minds with mood swings and anxiety common among all.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thakkar and eight of her colleagues who have mastered the Art of Living programme have taken it upon themselves to inculcate the practice of meditation among students and are conducting a 15-minute session in all the classrooms from Monday. The initiative seems to have been well-appreciated. &#8220;Its a rejuvenating experience,&#8217; &#8216; said Lipika Chandra, a Std X teacher at Lokpuram.</p>
<div class="ygrp-content">&#8220;I am seeing the change in my students. Earlier, they were very restless in class. They have been discussing the terror attacks and there was a certain amount of anger, a strange fear in their sub-conscious that it could happen here too.&#8221; According to her, the meditation programme has helped ease tensions and the students feel calm throughout the day, Chandra told TOI.</div>
<p>Thakkar and her team have designed a short programme for stress relief and peace meditation, having witnessed the teenagers&#8217; condition post 26/11. &#8220;It occurred to me that there is an immediate need to focus on this group after I saw children from the residential complex where I stay, assembling and chanting patriotic slogans during the terror strike. The anger was visible. More importantly, they were not led by any elder but had marched on to the streets on their own,&#8221; Thakkar said.</p>
<p>She added that the programme of short duration at Lokpuram, appreciated for the academic performance of its students in the CBSE curriculum, will be experimented with by other schools in the vicinity including the Arunodaya school and also select municipal schools in <span class="yshortcuts">Thane</span> city.</p>
<p>&#8220;It aims at relieving children of all tensions. I always tell them that when the mind is calm, there is more dynamism and clarity in their thinking. The school children who practice with us have given excellent feedback,&#8221; Thakkar said. &#8220;They said they feel rejuvenated, as if they have woken up after a long nap. They are able to respond better to situations and focus more as the 15 minutes in trance help them to rise above anger and ego,&#8221; she said.</h4>

Last week, I was all set to start off &#8216;Yoga Dhyaan Shibirs&#8217; for my neighbors. <span style="font-style:italic;">Yoga Dhyaan Shibirs</span>, conceptualized organized by the Art of Living Foundation, are free health and happiness workshops which are conducted by senior volunteers and teacher trainees of the Foundation.</div>
<p>Not too long ago I was given an orientation course and was duly presented with a manual which had the list of yoga asanas that I could teach.</p>
<p>Armed with the manual and some 10 by 10 square foot of apartment real estate, I mustered up enough courage to invite people to the workshop.</p>
<p>I was ready to take the world. After much campaigning, the world presented itself in the form of three sprightly boys who were around 5 foot height, give or take a few inches.</p>

Right. I decided to bow to the Will of the Universe and welcomed my students into my apartment.</p>
<p>On the first day, they sauntered in, bringing with them more skepticism and some enthusiasm. Perhaps they worried that the time for yoga would &#8216;eat&#8217; into their play time.</p>
<p>&#8220;Aunty, we have lots of homework so we need to finish fast&#8217;, their self-appointed spokesperson suggested. The others nodded vigorously. I told them not to worry and that I would be packing them off in just half an hour. On hearing that, they relaxed.</p>
<p>With each asana being demonstrated, they questioned each move and gave suggestions as to how the <span style="font-style:italic;">asana</span> can be modified in accordance with what they saw, mostly on TV. They obviously excelled in theory, but none of them ventured to make a move!</p>
<p>&#8220;Aunty, in our school they taught us to lift the right leg and wrap the left hand around the head and then turn fully around&#8221;, one of them suggested, going into merry convolutions even as he was saying it.</p>
<p>I patiently reassured him that there were different schools of Yoga which taught <span style="font-style:italic;">asanas</span> with slight variations. The boy relaxed a bit and tentatively tried to follow what I was demonstrating.</p>
<p>The Bhastrika Pranayaam proved to be a nose, er, sorry, mind-blowing experience for them. One of them started sneezing non-stop. Perhaps he had an instant allergic response to the pranayaam, I wondered.</p>
<p>Some moments of dancing and prancing followed after which they lay down blissfully and prepared for <span style="font-style:italic;">Yoga Nidra</span> (Yogic sleep). At this point, I thought I heard a gentle snore emanate from one sleeping figure. I had to instruct them more than once to wake up. The boys had had a long day of studies and play. So they must have fallen into (cosmic) sleep!</p>
<p>All in all, it was great fun. I can&#8217;t quite decide who had more fun, me or them. I like to believe that I was a winner here. Just watching their enthusiasm, fun, smiles, giggles and a whole lot of attempts at stretching tickled the funny bone endlessly.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s something about being with children, which makes the spirit soar. Maybe that is because they look upon life with so much joy. As Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar once put it: &#8220;&#8230;in the eyes of children, there is nothing dead in the world; animals, trees, the sun and the moon all are alive, and have emotions and feelings. But in the eyes of a stressed and ignorant person, even human beings are like robots or objects! &#8220;</p>
<p>By the end of the 5-day sessions, the yogis had pestered their parents to buy yoga mats for them. Now I hear that the mats are safely rolled into a corner in their rooms. Hopefully, they will air them every now and then with a bend here and a stretch there&#8230;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><strong><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">The Art of Living Foundation’s Non-Aggression Program (NAP) is a community-service school program designed especially for children and teachers.</span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">The Art of Living Foundation is an international Non Government Organization, which is working in over 130 countries offering programs and aid projects in the health, social and educational sector on voluntary basis.<span>  </span>It holds a special counseling status in the committee of Economics and social Affairs (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and takes part in UN conferences in New York, Geneva and Vienna.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">The main goal of the Art of Living Foundation is to nourish Human Values in society.<span>  </span>Change can be brought about when Human Values like compassion, feeling of belongingness, friendliness, lightness, laughter, wanting to help and care for each other are supported in society and the classroom.<span>  </span>All these qualities are inborn in every child; they only need to be cultivated. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">With the rise of the age of information the increasing complexity of life and society have an impact on our children.<span>  </span>Peer-group pressure rivalry amongst siblings the influence of media and pressure of performance are a massive burden on our children’s’ shoulders and cause them to lose their light-heartedness, enthusiasm and joy at a very young age.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">To respond to increasing violence in schools and to enhance friendliness in children and teenagers we are offering a twofold program:</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">One part of the program is aiming to give children and teenagers the chance to experience the meaning and power of human values—especially of non-violence—to have more acceptance for themselves and others and to support their personal development.<span>  </span>The life of students is full of possibilities, for example selection of school, career, profession and relationship.<span>  </span>To be able to make the right decisions, clarity of mind, concentration and self-confidence are necessary.<span>  </span>But what to do if exactly these qualities are lacking?<span>  </span>This program is offering students the opportunity to reduce stress, anger, rage and shyness by simple and yet effective breathing and relaxation techniques, dialogues, games and stories and to gain more clarity of mind and confidence in a light and playful manner.<span>  </span>This program consists of three consecutive sessions of 90 minutes per day</span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US"> plus a 90-min follow-up session.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">The complementary part of the program is a special training for teachers.</span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US"><span>  </span></span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">Children are learning from their parents and teachers.<span>  </span>A big responsibility for the development of our society is on the shoulders of our teachers’.<span>  </span>The new generation is looking to them for orientation.<span>  </span>Teachers have the difficulty to deal with dozens of students in the classroom.<span>  </span>This program therefore teaches mainly relaxation and breathing techniques to alleviate stress.<span>  </span>Additionally various examples are offered on how students are able to experience and/or develop the sense of belongingness with classmates and teachers, to take responsibility for each other and to help each other rather than being rivals.<span>  </span>This program also consists of t</span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US">hree</span><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;" lang="EN-US"> consecutive sessions of 90 minutes per day.</span></p>
